International Baccalaureate at Loomis Basin Charter School

An Education for Life – Developing Compassionate, Global Thinkers

At Loomis Basin Charter School (LBCS), we are proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Our school is committed to educating the whole child—intellectually, personally, emotionally, and socially—through two interconnected IB programs: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Primary Years Programme (PYP): Kindergarten – Grade 5

The PYP nurtures young learners as inquirers both in the classroom and in the world beyond. It is a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based approach that encourages curiosity, creativity, and compassion. Students explore six transdisciplinary themes of global significance that help them understand the world and their place in it:

  • Who We Are

  • Where We Are in Place and Time

  • How We Express Ourselves

  • How the World Works

  • How We Organize Ourselves

  • Sharing the Planet

Teachers design units of inquiry that integrate traditional subjects and promote deep conceptual understanding. Learning is guided by the IB Learner Profile, which aims to develop students who are: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

Middle Years Programme (MYP): Grades 6 – 8

The MYP continues to foster whole-child development while increasing academic rigor and real-world application. Students engage in a balanced and challenging curriculum that includes:

  • Language and Literature

  • Individuals and Societies

  • Sciences

  • Mathematics

  • Arts

  • Design

  • Physical and Health Education

  • World Languages (Spanish and an additional language beginning in Kindergarten)

MYP emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, character development, and service. Students participate in community action projects and ongoing reflection, helping them grow into responsible global citizens.
